Periyar forest in Thekkady is one of the well known wildlife reserves in India, and spread around the entire district are the spices plantations of cardamom, pepper etc. and captivating tea gardens that offer trekking opportunities.
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary: One among India's rich natural wildlife reserves, this forest spread in an area of 777 sq km, of which 360 sq.km is thick evergreen forest, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Periyar river adds to the charm of the park. There are about 265 species of birds including migrants, which make your boat trip worthwhile. A summer palace of the former Maharaja of Travancore, set along the lake, is now a hotel and a fine place to stay. Spice gardens and plantation estates surround the national park.
Boat Cruises: The Periyar Lake presents a boating trip for tourists. Although it is rare to see animals from the boats, it is worth a spin in the lake and with a little luck, you can spot a herd of Elephants, Wild Boar or Sambar Deer by the water's edge occasionally.
